talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan is hopeful Marcus Rashford can help Manchester United get back to their best next season.
Rashford, 24, netted his first goal under Erik ten Hag as the Red Devils secured a 4-1 victory over Melbourne Victory in a pre-season friendly on Friday.
The England international previously made it clear he is ready for a ‘fresh start’ after a lacklustre campaign, and boss Erik ten Hag has signalled his intent to make the forward a big part of his plans going forward.
Rashford has a year left on his current deal, with the option to extend for a further 12 months, but has had a difficult time of late.
He missed a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout and then went on to miss the first two months of the 2021/22 season after having shoulder surgery.
Struggling on his return, like so many at United last season, he netted just four Premier League goals.
But following his 78 minute strike on Friday against Melbourne Victory, Jordan has backed the forward to return to his very best.
“Marcus Rashford, to me, is a good player,” he told talkSPORT.
“But he has been put on a pedestal that his abilities are not at.
“He is good player, and you have to be to play for Manchester United, but he is not the player people have bought into.
“Maybe there is a realisation that we need to have more expectation of him, and also by the same token, not to the standards we saw last year.
“It would be nice to see a Marcus Rashford fit and firing, to give us more options in the World Cup in Qatar.
“Is he going to be a defining aspect if we win in Qatar if he is on top form? I don’t think so.
“It will be nice to see a young English player, who has clearly got talent, playing for one of our biggest clubs that needs to re-emerge themselves back in the grove and showing what he has done before.”
