Educating Newcastle United fans about friendlies

I have always enjoyed the reaction of some Newcastle United fans to friendlies.

As well as hopefully having a holiday somewhere canny, it is one of my personal highlights of each pre-season.

Newcastle beat some pretty poor opposition by a handful of goals and life is so sweet, dreaming of what could lie ahead.

Lose and not create many chances, even if against a decent level club, it is panic stations.

Having scored eight and strolling to wins against Gateshead and 1860 Munich, fair to say the (black and white) natives were happy.

However, losing 1-0 to Mainz in a tight match of few chances and the opposition taking their one big clear opportunity…questions need to be asked, apparently.

Well, it was blazing hot sunshine on Monday afternoon in Austria and didn’t really suit at all an all action performance, if that was what you wanted / expected. It was a good workout for both teams in difficult conditions and a lot of the time the two sides passed and passed the ball without too much pressing from the opposition players. It was almost as though the two teams were playing themselves towards match fitness, not taking unnecessary risks, getting a good workout with the result surely not mattering…

The thing is, I have noticed it is not just some Newcastle United fans, I think England fans are often guilty of taking friendly results (including the daft nations league) far too seriously. It doesn’t matter if you get beat in meaningless games. I think fans of other national sides understand and accept this far more, friendlies are maybe for trying things out, different players / tactics / formations, seeing if they work or not, hopefully you still win but if you don’t, no harm done. Maybe this has helped contribute to the near 60 years of hurt for England. Managers of the national side feeling the pressure from fans and taking friendlies far too seriously, rather than simply using them to prepare for the tournament finals.

You look at the five big European leagues and the national sides of those five countries, quite embarrassing really how England have got on in recent decades, compared to all of Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Anyway, back to Newcastle United fans, some of them anyway.

Mainz 05 finished eighth last season in the Bundesliga, losing 2-1 away at eventual champions Bayern Munich despite having led – lost to two second half goals, whilst as recently as 30 April they (Mainz 05) beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at home.

Yesterday, Newcastle were probably the better team but both sides largely cancelled each other out and without the kind of 100% throwing everything at it that you get in competitive matches, no real surprise that both sides struggled to create many chances.

Another factor ignored by some Newcastle United fans…

Newcastle team v Mainz 05:

Dubravka, Trippier, Schar (Burn 57), Botman, Dummett (Ritchie 31), Guimaraes, S. Longstaff, Joelinton, Almiron, Fraser, Wood

***Then on 60 minutes this became the team for the final half hour:

Pope, Krafth, Lascelles, Burn, Targett, Shelvey, Willock, Anderson, Murphy, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Bottom line is that Eddie Howe is pretty much cutting his first choice team in half.

Against Mainz 05 he started with Trippier, Botman, Bruno and Joelinton (as well as Fraser and Almiron). Currently what I would guess is exactly half his first choice outfield players.

Then the 1-0 defeat ended with Burn, Targett, ASM and Wilson (as well as Shelvey / Willock), the other half of his current first choice ten outfield players. Pope and Dubravka scrapping to be first choice keeper.

Newcastle team v 1860 Munich:

Pope, Krafth, Lascelles (Botman 46), Burn, Targett, Willock, Shelvey, Anderson, Murphy, Wilson, Saint-Maximin

***Then on 60 minutes, Botman joined on the pitch by another ten subs – Dubravka, Trippier, Schar, Dummett, Bruno, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Almiron, Fraser, Wood

As you can see, it was the same for the 3-0 over 1860 Munich.

Starting with Burn, Targett, ASM, Wilson (as well as Shelvey / Willock), then ending the game with Trippier, Botman, Bruno and Joelinton (as well as Fraser and Almiron). The exact opposite of what happened against Mainz 05, in terms of starting / ending and getting an hour or half on the pitch.

You know what, it is almost as if Eddie Howe has a plan…

A plan where if you end up losing then it simply doesn’t matter.

If he really wanted to make a point to Newcastle United fans, or whoever, then Eddie Howe could have indeed say picked what he considers his best eleven to start and play for an hour against Mainz 05 on Monday, then made a lot of changes for the final half hour. I dare say it would have almost certainly have produced a decent number of NUFC chances and a Newcastle United victory, but what would it have achieved?

Please, if you are going to bother watching pre-season friendlies, please take a reality / chill pill beforehand.

The result really doesn’t matter AND don’t expect you are automatically going to be entertained and / or lifted by what you see. Competitive games and friendlies where players aren’t fully match fit, are NOT the same thing.

Intruder Arrested At Drake’s New Home, Claims Rapper Is His Dad

Drake‘s brand new home apparently already had an unwanted visitor … cops arrested a man there who claimed the rapper was his dad.

LAPD tells TMZ … cops were called to the rapper’s Beverly Hills-adjacent mansion last Friday after an employee saw someone near the pool house.

Police questioned the 23-year-old … the man claimed 35-year-old Drake was his dad and he was just waiting for him to come home … but obviously cops weren’t buying it.

The man was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing … we’re told the guy never made it inside the house.

Drake plunked down $75M for the estate a few months back, buying the property from “Take That” singer Robbie Williams.

We’re told Drake wasn’t home during the incident. As we reported, he’s been spending time in Sweden, where he apparently had his own run-in with police.

His team first denied rumors about the alleged marijuana-related run-in, but he recently posted a doc on his IG titled, “Information for Those Suspected of a Crime and Subsequently Detained” … it sure seems he got this from Swedish authorities.

Maguire booed with every touch in pre-season friendly despite strong Ten Hag backing

Harry Maguire was subjected to booing from a section of the crowd during Manchester United’s pre-season clash with Crystal Palace.

The jeering aimed at the United defender could be heard from the early stages of the game and continued every time he touched the ball at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Maguire led United out in Australia and will remain as captain for the season, his manager has said

It will come as a blow to Maguire who was recently given a vote of confidence by manager Erik ten Hag, who confirmed the England international would remain as the club’s captain.

It is unclear why Maguire has been singled out for treatment in Melbourne but it is not the first time the 29-year-old has been the target of the boo-boys.

Maguire has been sectioned out while on international duty with England during a period of poor form for Manchester United.

By the 30 minute mark, the boos appeared to subside a little but for Maguire the damage was always done despite his best efforts to block out the noise.

Former Manchester City midfielder Trevor SInclair leapt to the player’s defence following Ten Hag’s decision to keep him as captain and believes that Managerial upheaval at Old Trafford contributed to his dip in form last term.

When quizzed on whether Maguire deserved to keep the armband Sinclair said: “It depends what form you look at with Harry Maguire. If it’s from 2020/21 you’d say yeah absolutely. In the 2021/22 season after the Euros, he wasn’t great and I think he’d be the first person to hold his hand up.

Truss bid to overhaul Mordaunt as MPs knock out another would-be PM TODAY

Liz Truss is mounting an all-out bid to overhaul Penny Mordaunt in the Tory leadership race today as the four remaining hopefuls gear up for another crucial knock-out vote.

Conservative MPs will whittle the numbers down to three this afternoon, with Rishi Sunak seemingly guaranteed a spot in the final run-off ballot of party members – but the race for second place still too close to call.

After a slow start, Ms Truss is hoping to build on her momentum from last night’s vote when she added another seven supporters to take her tally to 71.

Tory leadership contest – round three result

Rishi Sunak: 115 votes

Penny Mordaunt: 82 votes

Liz Truss: 71 votes

Kemi Badenoch: 58 votes

Tom Tugendhat: 31 votes – eliminated

Although she is still short of Ms Mordaunt’s numbers, the trade minister’s early surge appears to be stalling as she dropped a vote to 82.

She was also hit by one of her supporters, Tobias Ellwood, being stripped of the whip for being absent from a confidence vote in the government last night. The defence committee chair was on an official trip in Moldova, raising questions about dirty tricks by Boris Johnson supporters.

Kemi Badenoch will be favourite for ejection today, but is still in touch after racking up an extra nine backers to reach 58.

Ms Truss has been wooing supporters of former soldier Tom Tugendhat, who came bottom and was eliminated last night, by vowing to boost defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP by 2030.

‘We live in an increasingly dangerous world where the threat level is higher than a decade ago, and we need a stronger deterrent to face down those threats and ensure Britain leads on the global stage,’ she said.

‘Ultimately that requires more resources. My number one priority is keeping this country safe and people can trust me to do that.’

But her rivals are also courting Mr Tugendhat, with Ms Mordaunt tweeting that she had ‘admired’ him for years and Ms Badenoch saying he would be an ‘asset’ to any future Conservative government.

Leaving home this morning, Ms Badenoch said it is still ‘all to play for’.

Mr Sunak’s team had feared he would not add much to his tally, but in the event they were jubilant as he increased his score from 101 to 115.

Anything over 120 guarantees a place in the final two, as there are 358 Conservative MPs in total.

Mr Sunak has been trying to beef up his support on the Tory right today, promising harsher sentences for criminals who refuse to attend court for their sentencing hearings and a crackdown on grooming gangs.

He has also been boosted by an endorsement from former leader Lord Hague, who praised him as an ‘exceptional individual’ who can be trusted at ‘one of the hardest times to be prime minister in our lifetimes: certainly since 1979, possibly since 1945’.

HOW THE TORY LEADERSHIP RACE WILL PLAY OUT

Today – A fourth ballot will be held to whittle the numbers down to three.

Wednesday: Assuming no-one drops out, a fifth ballot will decide the final pair, ending the parliamentary phase of the contest.

21st July – MPs will head away from Westminster for their summer break.

Late July and August – CCHQ will assume responsibility for leadership election and will send out ballot papers to around 200,000 Conservative Party members. The Tory grassroots will be asked to decide between the final two candidates, with hustings events to be held across the UK.

5th September – The result of the membership ballot is announced, with the candidate receiving more than 50 per cent of the vote being declared the new Tory leader and Boris Johnson’s replacement as Prime Minister.

6th September – The new Tory leader is likely to be formally appointed as PM during a visit to the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

7th September – The new PM is set to be quizzed in the House of Commons in their first ever Prime Minister’s Questions.

After the latest installment of drama last night, the candidates and their allies tried to put the best gloss on their performances.

A spokesman for the Truss campaign said: ‘Liz is the candidate to lead a bold new economic approach, cut taxes, deliver on the benefits of Brexit, unite the Party and win a General Election.

‘Tom Tugendhat ran a campaign that he can be very proud of and he has shown the depth of quality in the Conservative Party.

‘Now is the time to get behind the best candidate to deliver the economic change we need.’

Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, who is backing Ms Truss, insisted she had ‘gone forward’ while Ms Mordaunt’s campaign had ‘stalled and gone backwards’.

However, Ms Mordaunt said her ‘vote is steady’. ‘My vote is steady and I’m grateful to my colleagues for all their support and thrilled to be in second place once more. MPs know that I’m a strong candidate, running a truly clean campaign and putting forward a positive vision for the party and our country.

‘Tom Tugendhat MP is a friend and colleague who I’ve admired for years, I know that we are both committed to a clean start for our party and I believe he is one of the strongest assets the Conservative green benches. It was an honour to stand alongside him in this contest.’

Ms Badenoch’s biggest backer Michael Gove swiped earlier that supporters of some of the leading names were experiencing ‘buyer’s remorse’.

And his candidate said: ‘It’s all to play for. Continued momentum, closing the gap, I am the only change candidate left in the race. I’m in it to win.’

A Sunak spokeswoman said he was ‘the candidate with the clearest plan to restore trust, rebuild the economy, reunite the country and because he is best placed to beat Labour at the next election’.

Mr Tugendhat said: ‘I want to thank my team, colleagues and, most of all, the British people for their support. I have been overwhelmed by the response we have received across the country. People are ready for a clean start and our party must deliver on it and put trust back into politics.

‘I wish the remaining candidates well and look forward to continuing to serve the British people and fully supporting the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.’

The intense intrigue at Westminster came after it emerged that the candidates have endured their final TV debate in this phase.

Sky News cancelled the showdown that had been planned for tonight after both Mr Sunak and Ms Truss pulled out, with sources saying they wanted to limit infighting.

George Freeman, a key supporter of Ms Mordaunt, tried to put a brave face on the results, predicting that she will pick up ‘a lot’ of Mr Tugendhat’s supporters now that he has exited the contest.

He told Sky News: ‘After the three days’ pounding she’s had in the media, to be honest I’m delighted she’s held second place.

‘Nobody has been attacked so savagely in the Tory press than Penny Mordaunt and her support is strong.

‘I think the story tonight is Kemi Badenoch is becoming the heroine on the right, she’s picked up a lot of votes.

‘I think what you’ll see now is a lot of that One Nation support base for Tom Tugendhat… I think a lot of them will come to Penny as the One Nation compassionate Conservative.’

Worryingly for Ms Mordaunt, one of Mr Tugendhat’s key allies Anne-Marie Trevelyan said she expected his supporters would ‘travel as a pack’ on who to endorse next.

And she reiterated her criticism of Ms Mordaunt’s performance as a trade minister, saying colleagues had to ‘pick up the pieces’ while she spent months plotting a leadership bid.

‘The challenge in our case, in the Department for International Trade, has been that she has – in a number of situations – not been available to take up the work that was required in a number of ways, be it visits or parliamentary duties,’ Ms Trevelyan said.

Mr Duncan Smith told Sky News that Ms Truss is in ‘prime position’ to make the run-off.

‘You’ve got to understand how these things work, what happens is – in this round – those that go forward will be the ones that benefit in the next round,’ he said.

‘Liz is definitely in that, she’s in prime position to do that. Because there are still a lot of votes sitting there that are likely to come to Liz at some point once this is settled.’

Sir Iain claimed that support for Ms Badenoch had grown because Tory MPs ‘wanted to stop Penny’, adding: ‘Now they have to make a decision as to who they want to vote for.’

He urged Ms Badenoch’s supporters to ‘come together with Liz’.

Tory former chief whip Mark Harper, who is supporting Mr Sunak, hailed a ‘very solid result’ for the ex-chancellor.

‘We’re optimistic but we’re not going to take a single thing for granted,’ he told Sky News when he was asked if Mr Sunak was nailed on to reach the final pairing.

‘If you look at where the votes went, Rishi was up 14 – that was a stronger performance than any other candidate at a time when the votes that were freed up by Suella (Braverman) exiting the contest were very unlikely to come his way.’

New Tottenham signing ‘ran Arsenal ragged’ and will cause opponents ‘huge problems’

New Tottenham signing Djed Spence will be a ‘star’ in the Premier League, says Trevor Sinclair, which was evident when he ran Arsenal ‘ragged’ in the FA Cup last season.

Spurs have confirmed the signing of the Middlesbrough defender, with the 21-year-old arriving for a reported upfront fee of £12.5million, rising to £20m.

Spence is ready to make an impact in the Premier League for Tottenham next season

Whilst this will be the wing-back’s first taste of Premier League football, he is already accustomed to beating top-flight sides, after wins against Arsenal and Leicester in the FA Cup last season.

Nottingham Forest, where Spence spent last season on loan, beat the top flight sides in the third and fourth round, before losing to Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

The youngster starred in both of those games and Sinclair insists that his performances showed he is ready to ‘hit the ground running’ for the north Londoners and will cause some real problems in a Tottenham shirt.

“I think Spurs have done some really good business,” Sinclair told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I’ve been very impressed and I think they’ll have a go at breaking that monopoly of the top-three in the Premier League.

“There is competition for places but I think Djed Spence will go straight in there, especially with the way that Antonio Conte likes to play 3-4-3. I think he’s is going to be a huge problem.

“He really made his mark in the Championship last season and also played very well against Leicester City when they knocked them out of the FA Cup.

“I think he’s the real deal.”

He added: “It’s a great bit of business for Tottenham and I think he’s going to hit the ground running.

“He’s going to be a star in the Premier League.”

Premier League clubs near £1bn mark – Record transfer window now inevitable

The 2022 summer transfer window for the 20 Premier League clubs officially opened on Friday 10 June.

The window lasting 84 days / twelve weeks, until 11pm on Thursday 1 September when the window closes.

So far, thirty nine of these transfer window days have passed, with 45 (including today – Tuesday 19 July) remaining.

We are now at the point where 61 incoming signings by Premier League clubs have been confirmed (listed below), with some £980m committed already in initial transfer fees.

The 20 Premier League clubs are now set for an all but guaranteed record summer window.

Premier League clubs are now on track to beat their previous record of £1.43bn spent on signings back in summer 2017.

With less than 47% of this summer 2022 window gone, the Premier League clubs are already collectively around 69% of that all-time record set five summers ago.

With any number of big signings speculated as still set to happen, I can’t see how that record isn’t going to be broken, maybe even by the time the season kicks off in two and a half weeks time.

So which Premier League clubs have been busy so far…?

A breakdown below for each club with Tottenham Man City and Leeds leading the way, then Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd, then Newcastle United in eighth.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck will soon be surrounded by their closest friends and family to celebrate their marriage at his estate in Georgia … a plan almost IDENTICAL to how things were supposed to go down 20 years ago.

Sources familiar tell TMZ … back when the couple got engaged in 2002, they planned on getting married at Ben’s 87-acre property outside Savannah, GA. We’re told everything was in place leading up to their big day — including police and security to HOLD the unwelcome at bay before the couple decided to call everything off … ending the engagement in 2004.

TMZ broke the story, Ben and Jen got married in Vegas early Saturday morning in a tiny chapel ceremony that included their kids … but they’ll throw a massive party at Ben’s GA estate by the end of the month.

The property, about an hour’s drive from Savannah, features several homes, including a 10,000 square foot main house and a smaller, 6,000 sq. foot home … so there’s plenty of bedrooms for guests.

Jennifer released a statement shortly after we broke the wedding news, saying, “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.”

Clearly, she feels the sentimental value of the pair getting hitched so many years later … so you gotta wonder if the party at Ben’s is a make-right on plans spoiled 20 years ago.

Spurs confirm Spence, Atletico open Ronaldo talks, Chelsea make fresh Kounde bid

Tottenham have today confirmed their sixth summer signing by landing Djed Spence in a deal worth up to £20million.

Manchester United have signed Ajax star Lisandro Martinez, subject to a medical and personal terms, and are continuing to chase Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, has hinted that he may stay, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain all out of the running to sign him but Atletico Madrid could be an option with links emerging to the Spanish side – despite his history with rivals Real.

Chelsea have now completed the transfer of Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli as they bolster their defensive options but are still looking to land Jules Kounde.

One man who could be heading for the exit at Stamford Bridge is Armando Broja, with West Ham increasingly confident they can sign the forward. That Hammers are also in the running to sign Jesse Lingard following his Old Trafford exit.

Boris Johnson took revenge on one of his loudest Tory critics today for failing to support his Government.

Former minister Tobias Ellwood was stripped of the party whip after he failed to vote in last night’s Commons confidence vote.

But the move is likely to be seen as driven purely by the PM’s desire to get back at a backbencher who has made little secret of his loathing for him.

Mr Ellwood, a former soldier, is chairman of the Defence Committee and is currently in Moldova on an official visit in that role.

The 55-year-old father of two was one of 12 Tories who abstained in the confidence vote last night, which Mr Johnson comfortably won 349 to 238, thanks to his huge majority.

This morning he appeared to indicate his support for Penny Mordaunt in the Tory leadership race, retweeting her campaign video. Stripping him of the whip means he can no longer vote.

Mr Johnson’s team is believed to be tacitly backing rival Liz Truss, with several ministers coming out in support including Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

A spokeswoman for the Tory Whips Office said: ‘Tobias Ellwood MP has lost the Conservative Party whip following his failure to vote in support of the Government in the confidence vote last night.’

But in a statement Mr Ellwood said he is ‘very sorry’ to lose the Tory whip but argued he was unable to return from a meeting with the president of Moldova due to ‘unprecedented disruption’.

In a statement, the senior MP said: ‘Following my meeting yesterday with the president of Moldova I was unable to secure return travel due to unprecedented disruption both here and in the UK.

‘I am very sorry to lose the whip but will now continue my meetings in Ukraine promoting the Prime Minister’s efforts here and specifically seeking to secure the reopening of Odesa port – so vital grain exports can recommence.’

Ministers and backbenchers with valid reasons to be away from Parliament when there are votes are usually paired with people in similar positions in opposition parties, in order to keep the balance of the voting groups fair.

The process is discretionary and sometimes does not apply for major votes like a confidence vote.l

It is not clear why Mr Ellwood was not paired last night. He is a Remainer and long-term critic of the PM who has long called for him to be replaced as Tory leader, though he did not run in the leadership contest to replace Mr Johnson.

Mr Ellwood is a former Army captain who made headlines in 2017 when he went to the aid of PC Keith Palmer who had been fatally stabbed by terrorist Khalid Masood outside the Palace of Westminster.

He was veterans minister at the Ministry of Defence under Theresa May but returned to the backbenches to lead the defence committee after Mr Johnson took office.
