Marcus Rashford admits he is ready for a ‘fresh start’ at Manchester United after putting in the hard graft during his summer break.
New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has signalled his intent to make Rashford a big part of his team and it will be a big year for the 24-year-old.
He has a year left on his current deal, with the option to extend for a further 12 months, but has had a difficult time of late
Rashford missed a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout and then went on to miss the first two months of the season after having shoulder surgery.
He struggled on his return, like so many at United last season, scoring just four Premier League goals.
It was a far cry from the heights he reached as recently as the 2019/20 season where he netted 17 league goals.
The Red Devils are crying out for a reset and it is hoped Ten Hag will be the man to deliver that.
Rashford has been using his summer break to have a break from the Old Trafford club, but has also been using the time to get in the shape of his life.
The forward has posted several videos on social media of his workouts in a bid to attack the new season.
After a short beach holiday, Rashford has spent much of the summer in the United States getting into shape.
He spent six days at the Nike HQ in Portland, Oregon where he would spend the morning in the gym doing strength and conditioning work.
In the early afternoon, he would then tackle a 200-metre sprint track tilted upwards at a 15.6-degree angle. He was clocked at an impressive time of 25 seconds.
Rashford then worked on his finishing against goalkeepers and defenders provided by Nike.
The England star is excited for the new season and is going into it with a fresh mindset.
“I think we can do a lot together,” Rashford said. “For me, it’s a fresh start and something I am looking forward to.
“The first two and a half weeks of training have been good. We’ve improved a lot, we’re a lot fitter than we were last season.
“And also we’re making mistakes along the way, so we have a lot of room for improvement.
“I’m in a good place right now and I’m just looking forward to getting more games under my belt and get ready for the season.”
Rashford looked sharp during his 45 minute cameo in Tuesday’s 4-0 friendly win against Liverpool in Thailand, with further action to come over United’s three matches in Australia.
The forward is enjoying the demanding work set by Ten Hag and his coaches after a rare summer break that he hopes will help him to regain form.
“It’s been a bit unnatural for me to have such a long break in the summer,” Rashford said in Melbourne.
“I think I had just under four weeks, so I had a long break physically and mentally as well so it’s an opportunity to refresh and get ready to go again.
“It’s always the case with a new season, whether you win or lose, so I just use that opportunity to do what I’ve always done and just refocus.
“This is my first year where I have been with the team from the beginning (of pre-season).
“And, to be honest, I already feel a lot better than usually when you go on internationals and you come back midway through the pre-season.
“It’s important for me to get a fresh start and I have been given that opportunity, so, yeah, I feel fresh and I feel ready.”
