To do that he’s needed to continually improve his strength, with the effects clearly on show during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the US.

The 23-year-old looks almost unrecognisable to the youngster who broke through at Derby in 2018 and Chelsea in 2019, bulking on mass since arriving on the scene as a slight youngster.

Discussing his change, Mount told Sky Sports: “You want to be someone that’s able to put yourself about a bit as a midfielder.

“But yeah I think people were picking up on it… it’s not done yet! It’s a long journey so it’s only the start of it.”

And after being asked if he’s been eating double portions, Mount joked: “Did you see my lunch just now? I had the biggest wrap you have ever seen.”

Mount has become key to both the club and manager Thomas Tuchel as one of the first names on the team sheet, and is firmly a fan favourite, especially given his assist fr Kai Havertz’ winner in the 2021 Champions League final.

However, when the club’s ownership was up in the air earlier this year after Roman Abramovich announced he’d put the side up for sale, Mount’s name entered the rumour mill.

With just two years left on his contract, rivals would understandably be monitoring the situation, but the attacking midfielder has since quashed those fears.

“I’ve got two years left on my contract and I’m very, very happy here,” he said. “Those talks [on an extension] will hopefully be starting soon.”
