Lord Alan Sugar has responded to a TV commentator’s jibe over comments he made about coverage of the Women’s European Championship.

The businessman had tuned into Euro 2022 at the weekend, but appeared to take issue with the number of females bringing the nation coverage of the tournament.

“I am watching the women’s football and notice the ALL the commentators are women,” he posted to his 5.2million followers on Twitter.

“I also note when men’s football is on there is a symbolic female commentator to cover the broadcasters a***. Should I complain there should me a male commentator in women’s football?”

This is despite former Arsenal striker Ian Wright and Jonas Eidevall, the Arsenal Women’s manager, featuring in the TV coverage. Likewise, on talkSPORT, Sam Matterface and Adrian Durham are part of the commentary team for the tournament in England.

As England went in at half-time 6-0 up in their second game of the tournament, against Norway on Monday, BBC commentator Robyn Cowen sent him a special message.

“We just had a lovely studio shot of one our studio guests, Jonas Eidevall, one of our symbolic men,” she said.

“Good evening, Lord Sugar!”

But Sugar, the former Tottenham chairman who is better to known to many today for his role on The Apprentice, thinks he may have helped.

“I was pleased to see my old mate Ian Wright was given the opportunity to commentate on the ladies game last night,” he wrote.

“I wonder if my earlier tweet below touched a nerve. Of course BBC sport will say not at all, Ian was already lined up for it.”

Unsurprisingly, he has already received a few disapproving responses.

TV host Gabby Logan, who had responded to Sugar’s previous tweet, asked: “Is this a parody account?”

Meanwhile football commentator Jacqui Oatley said: “It gets funnier and funnier.”
