Reports of Arsenal making a move for Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante have been quashed.
Stories had emerged of the Gunners lining up a bid for the World Cup winner, but it appears that isn’t the case, as things stand.
Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano has dealt a double blow to Arsenal fans, saying there are no negotiations for Kante, and there hasn’t been a proposal submitted for Lille winger Edon Zhegrova.
A Premier League winner with both Chelsea and Leicester, Kante saw his minutes reduced at Stamford Bridge last season due to injury and extra competition in the Blues midfield.
That lack of dependency also coincides with the Frenchman’s contract expiring next summer, meaning Thomas Tuchel may be persuaded to cash in this year rather than risk losing him for free in 2023.
The Daily Star reports that Arsenal are keen to exploit that uncertainty with Mikel Arteta lacking in depth in central and defensive midfield.
However, Romano claims that no negotiations have taken place, but that could later change.
Arsenal have been busy this summer, bringing in Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City and Fabio Vieira from Porto as well as back-up goalkeeper Matt Turner and Brazilian youngster Marquinhos.
Despite the business done, the Gunners are still slightly short in the centre of the park, and last season had to start matches without a recognised midfielder.
Injuries to Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka red cards left Arteta without options last season, and not only would Kante help ease that dilemma, but also offer a huge upgrade.
