Harry Maguire accidentally liked a post about Cristiano Ronaldo being upset about an apparent wage cut at Manchester United.
Ronaldo’s club future is headline news at the moment after it had emerged he had requested to leave the Premier League side this summer.
Part of his reasoning is that he wants to play Champions League football in the coming season, something United cannot offer after their disappointing sixth place finish in the Premier League.
The Manchester Evening News has claimed Ronaldo and his fellow stars have had their wages slashed by 25 per cent following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
This has also reportedly contributed to the 37-year-old’s dissatisfaction at the club.
This story was re-posted on the SportBible Instagram account, and was subsequently liked by Red Devils defender Maguire.
However, it emerged that the post had been liked in error from the defender’s account and it has now been removed.
Ronaldo’s wages would drop to £360,000-a-week if he is not allowed to leave Old Trafford this summer, down from his eye-watering £480,000-a-week he currently earns.
There appears to be a multitude of reasons why the Portugal superstar wants to leave, with the club’s lack of signings under Erik ten Hag another factor.
Ronaldo has missed three days of training with Man United due to ‘family reasons’ and the club are unsure whether he will be on their pre-season tour.
Ten Hag’s side fly to Bangkok on Friday for a lucrative 16-day trip which also includes games in Australia.
