What’s the one thing you don’t want to happen in your first press conference as manager of a new club?
A group of mask-wearing ultras storming the room and confronting you and the club’s chairman is probably right up there.
Well, that’s exactly what happened to former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Albert Riera after he was appointed manager of Slovenian club Olimpija Ljubljana.
The Spaniard, who made 55 Premier League appearances, recently left his position as Galatasaray’s assistant boss to take up his first role as a manager.
And Riera was challenged by some of the club’s supporters as he was talking to the media, with the group of individuals believed to have an issue with the dismissal of former manager Robert Prosinecki.
That’s according to El Partidazo de COPE, who adds that the former Croatia international was forced out after just three months at the club due to a dispute with the board.
The situation with Riera, 40, escalated and he eventually left the room as tensions rose, which isn’t an ideal start to life in charge of the club.
He took his first training session on Monday and his first game will take place on Thursday, when Olimpija take on Luxembourgian side Differdange 03 in a Europa Conference League qualifying round.
Riera moved to Liverpool in an £8million move from Espanyol in 2008, going on to score five times for the club.
He had spent time on loan at Man City two years prior to that, as well as featuring eight times for Watford in 2018.
