Around 30,000 Newcastle United fans have been left disappointed after a small number of additional season tickets quickly sold out ahead of the club’s first full season under new ownership.
The club revealed last week that they were to release a ‘limited number’ of season tickets after renewals reached unprecedented levels.
Around 1,000 season tickets went on sale on Tuesday morning and were snapped up in just over an hour.
At one stage, there were more than 30,000 fans queuing on the club’s website for the small batch of tickets as fans excitedly await the new Premier League season.
The additional seats were only made available to fans who had bought a season ticket, single match ticket or membership at any point since July 1, 2019.
It is a far cry from the days of Mike Ashley’s ownership when the club gave away 10,000 season tickets in response to fan protests against the retail entrepreneur.
Fan backlash ensued following the departure of manager Rafa Benitez and the appointment of Steve Bruce in 2019.
Despite thousands of fans staying away from St James’ Park during Ashley’s tenure, it appears that many are ready to make their return with demand for tickets resembling something similar to the Kevin Keegan era of the mid-1990s.
The £300 million takeover of Newcastle United was completed in October 2021 by a Saudi-led consortium, ending Ashley’s 14-year reign as owner.
Steve Bruce was dismissed from his post as manager just two-weeks later and subsequently replaced by Eddie Howe.
Howe steered Newcastle away from almost-certain relegation to a comfortable 11th-placed finish and the club be confident of finishing even higher next season.
The Magpies have secured the signings of Matt Targett and Nick Pope this summer and are closing in on highly-rated Lille centre-back Sven Botman, who completed his medical on Monday.
And it’s likely there will be more incomings too ahead of an exciting campaign.
