If only transfers were as easy to conclude now as they were in 1994.
All Alan Sugar had to do to convince Jurgen Klinsmann to sign for Tottenham was invite him onto his yacht and give him a coffee, the German has revealed.
Having impressed at the 1994 World Cup in America, the striker was ready to leave French side Monaco.
And, whilst Klinsmann says he had offers from Spain and Italy, one call from former Spurs owner Sugar was enough to bring him to north London.
“I scored five goals at the World Cup,” he told talkSPORT.
“If I had two more games then I might have maybe been top scorer but, unfortunately, we got knocked out in the quarter-finals.
“I had an offer from an Italian club, but I’d already played in Italy. I also had an offer from a Spanish club.
“And then, suddenly, I got a phone call and it’s Alan Sugar on the phone!
“He said, ‘I’m actually here in Monte Carlo on my yacht, is there any chance we can meet up for a coffee?’
“I said, ‘Oh yeah, that’s 200 yards away from me’. I lived in an apartment building.
“So, we had a cappuccino, we discussed things for over two hours, and the deal was done!”
Klinsmann is one of the very few people that have heard Sugar say, ‘You’re hired’, rather than, ‘You’re fired’…
You can listen to Jurgen Klinsmann reflect on his memorable football career with Paul Coyte in the opening episode of a new series of My Sporting Life, at 8pm this Sunday on talkSPORT
