Gareth Bale’s heroic Wales performance showed his critics in Spain that bullies don’t thrive, Trevor Sinclair believes.
The Real Madrid outcast was his nation’s hero once again, as two fantastic goals – including a sensational free-kick – secured a 2-1 victory over Austria in the World Cup play-offs.
It sends the Dragons to within one victory of Qatar 2022 – but Bale continues to endure a rather different experience at the Bernabeu.
Having appeared just five times this season, the 32-year-old was called a ‘parasite’ by Spanish newspaper Marca after missing the 4-0 defeat to Barcelona due to injury and then shaking it off for Wales.
Bale has previously infuriated Madrid fans by holding up a banner which read ‘Wales, golf, Madrid, in that order’, while collecting £570,000-a-week in wages from the club.
In response to fierce criticism in Spain, specifically the article in Marca, Bale said: “I don’t need to send a message, it’s a waste of my time, it’s disgusting and they should all be ashamed of themselves. I’m not fussed, end of.”
And ex-England international Sinclair believes Bale’s defiant performance spoke louder than words.
“I was buzzing for Wales last night,” he told the talkSPORT Breakfast. “I was absolutely delighted for Gareth Bale.
“The way that he’s been treated in Spain is disgusting and he’s proven that bullies won’t thrive. They won’t have him over.
“They’ve tried to force him out of the club and he’s stayed true to his word.
“There is a conversation to be had, because he’s only played two hours of football.
“But what a performance last night. The free-kick was outrageous.
“I was in the squad for the Greece game when David Beckham scored the free-kick to send England to the World Cup.
“I think that’s got a lot of similarities. I know it’s not the last game and the last minute.
“But talk about players that turn up in the big occasions – and he’s got a catalogue of that.”
Bale will leave the Bernabeu this summer when his lucrative six-year contract finally comes to an end – and former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy insists the ex-Tottenham winger remains a superstar.
Cundy told the Sports Bar: “His best performances in the last two years have been for Wales. He basically keeps himself fit for Wales!
“What a goal, it’s possibly the best free-kick he’s taken.
“He’s still a superstar.”
