Euro 2020 champions Italy fail to qualify for second successive World Cup with shock defeat at home to North Macedonia

Italy may be European champions but they won’t be playing at the 2022 World Cup as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to North Macedonia.

The Azzurri, who broke England hearts by beating them in the final of Euro 2020, have now failed to qualify for the last two World Cups.

The winner came from the right boot of Aleksandar Trajkovski, who struck brilliantly from long range in the second minute of stoppage-time to give North Macedonia the shock victory.

Elsewhere, Wales set up a potential play-off showdown with Scotland as two brilliant goals from Gareth Bale sealed them a 2-1 win over Austria.

There were no issues for Portugal, who beat Turkey 3-1, with Liverpool forward Diogo Jota among the scorers.

Meanwhile, Sweden were taken to extra-time after they and the Czech Republic played out a goalless draw in their play-off.
