David Beckham has handed over control of his Instagram account over to a doctor based in the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The former professional footballer has 71.5 million followers on the social media site and is now using his platform to encourage his fans to donate to Unicef, who are out in Ukraine helping those affected.
Since Sunday, Beckham‘s Instagram posts have been a selection of videos and photos posted by Ukrainian doctor Iryna, demonstrating the frightening conditions pregnant women and new mothers are enduring amidst the country’s conflict with Russia.
Iryna, who is a child anaesthesiologist and head of the regional perinatal centre in the city, explained that she and her team are now working around the clock to care for the women despite the ongoing invasion.
On the ex-Manchester United star’s page, the doctor said: “We are probably risking our lives, but we don’t think about it at all. We love our work.
“Doctors and nurses here, we worry, we cry, but none of us will give up.”
Unicef are currently providing Ukrainian families with access to clean water and food, delivering kits to maternity hospitals such as oxygen machines, and ensuring child protection services continue.
