Harry Redknapp recalled the time he found himself caught up in a touchline bust-up with Kenny Dalglish… during a Soccer Aid match.
In 2008 at Wembley, Redknapp was in charge of England, while Scotland and Liverpool legend Dalglish was in the opposite dug out for Rest of the World in the charity match.
The game is largely played in good spirits – it’s for charity after all – but there can often be a competitive edge to the clash.
Redknapp joined talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday and remembered the funny tale of how his opposite number was none too happy with the English substitutions.
“I love Kenny, we are good friends, but we get on the touchline at Wembley and with 10 minutes to go I take Craig David off,” the former Tottenham and West Ham explained.
“I put on the lad Gareth Gates. He runs up the wing, comes back and can’t breathe. He’s got an inhaler.
“I’m going ‘are you alright, Gareth?’ He’s got a stammer and couldn’t get the message to me very quickly.
“He wants to come off and I said to Craig to go back on.
“Kenny is there saying ‘what’s your game? You know you can’t put someone on once they’ve come off’.
“I ended up giving him right abuse, we’ve had a row like you’ve never seen and he’s got the Spin Doctor on the bench, Alistair Campbell, and I’ve said ‘you haven’t even put him on’.
“He had a geezer from Chile and he hasn’t even given him a game. We had the biggest argument ever and he wouldn’t shake my hand after the game.”
England eventually went on to win that game with Teddy Sheringham, Alan Shearer (2) and Johnny Wilkes scoring in a 4-3 victory over Rest of the World.
You never lose that competitive edge, eh.
