Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK Government and the consequences could wreak havoc with the Blues, especially their loan players.
The club currently have 24 players out on loan and this new situation casts huge doubt over all of their futures.
Guidance from the government indicates that Chelsea can’t hand out any new contracts.
This means that the Blues might not be able to keep their very best young talent or sell any of their deadwood.
However, this could be good news for the likes of Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja.
Both have long-term contracts with Chelsea, so could become very important players next season.
Chelsea’s loan players
Nathan Baxter – Hull City
Jamie Cumming – MK Dons
Sami Tlemcani – Merstham
Ethan Wady – Hendon
Karlo Ziger – NK Rudar Velenje
Ethan Ampadu – Venezia
Juan Castillo – Charlton Athletic
Jake Clarke-Salter – Coventry City
Emerson Palmieri – Olympique Lyon
Levi Colwill – Huddersfield Town
Henry Lawrence – AFC Wimbledon
Ian Maatsen – Coventry City
Baba Rahman – Reading
Dujon Sterling – Blackpool
Matt Miazga – Alaves
Tino Anjorin – Lokomotiv Moscow
Tiemoue Bakayoko – AC Milan
Danny Drinkwater – Reading
Conor Gallagher – Crystal Palace
Billy Gilmour – Norwich City
Armando Borja – Southampton
Michy Batshuayi – Besiktas
Mason Burstow – Charlton Athletic
Bryan Fiabema – Rosenborg
Conor Gallagher
Gallagher is currently on loan with Crystal Palace and he has been a shining star for the Eagles this season.
The 22-year-old has fired in eight Premier League goals across the year, including strikes against Manchester City and Everton.
Given that he is contracted to the club until 2025, and as it stands, the Blues can’t sell anyone, Gallagher could become a key player for Chelsea next season.
You would have thought that he would have been in the first-team squad anyway, but given the situation, he could become one of their most important players.
Armando Broja
The 20-year-old forward has had a huge impact on loan with Southampton this season.
The young striker has started 15 Premier League games and has scored six goals in those starts.
However, it is his overall game that has impressed most people and he looks born to play in the Premier League as he is direct and physical.
He is another player who could become very important for the Blues next season.
Broja signed a new five-year contract before he joined the Saints and Chelsea won’t be able to sell him in the summer.
Therefore, you would expect the Albanian to take on a prominent role in the next campaign.
Billy Gilmour
The Scottish youngster is currently on loan with Norwich until the end of the season.
He signed a four-year contract with the Blues in 2019, so he will only have a year of his deal left in the summer.
Now, given that Chelsea can’t buy or sell players under these new sanctions, Gilmour is another player who could become prominent next season.
However, there is also the chance that the Blues release him from his deal in order to ease the wage bill, which is likely to go up in the summer when all of Chelsea’s other players return from their respective loans.
Gilmour has proven himself to be a solid Premier League player, but could the club decide he isn’t good enough?
Emerson Palmieri
The 27-year-old full-back is another player who Chelsea could be stuck with, or they could release him.
Emerson is currently on a season-long loan with Lyon, but his contact at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2023.
This means that Emerson could still have a future with Thomas Tuchel’s side for at least another season.
Remember, the Blues wanted to bring him back in January as cover for Marcos Alonso, so he might get another crack in the Chelsea first team.
Of course, he could also be released given that he has so little time remaining on his contract.
Tiemoue Bakayoko
Bakayoko has been with Chelsea since the summer of 2017, but the move hasn’t worked out for him or the club.
He is currently on loan with AC Milan, his fourth temporary spell away from the club.
However, his deal doesn’t expire until 2023, so the Blues could be stuck with a player who has struggled so badly in England.
For whatever reason, Bakayoko couldn’t perform to a high level in the Premier League, and there is the very real prospect that he could be in the Blues’ squad next season.
Of course, they might decide to release him in the summer, but at the moment, it is unclear what his future holds.
