There are some talented footballers in the EFL – and Joey Barton believes he’s got one of the best.
Elliot Anderson, who joined Barton’s Bristol Rovers from the 39-year-old’s former club Newcastle in January, has helped turn the Gas’ season around.
They have lost just two games since Anderson signed on deadline day from the Magpies, with the attacking midfielder scoring three and assisting two in 13 games.
It means that Rovers have shot right up the table and are now in contention for promotion back to League One, after a disappointing start to the season.
And Anderson has been a huge part of that, with Barton claiming that the Magpies youngster reminds him of one of the greatest players of all time – Diego Maradona, after hearing the words of a Liverpool legend.
“I’ve been listening to Bill Shankly tapes a lot today,” he told BristolLive.
“He talked a lot about a 19-year-old Diego Maradona and how he slows down in the penalty area, exactly like Elliot Anderson does. (He is) such a talent.”
He added: “Elliot has been brilliant for us from the first day we brought him in. I would have paid to watch him tonight – he was that good. He is growing into the shirt and his goal capped an outstanding performance.
“Elliot is a huge talent. He excites you and tonight he showed a different gear to be the stand-out player on the pitch.”
It’s Anderson’s first loan move, having joined Newcastle at the age of eight.
The 19-year-old made his first-team debut against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round last year, before making his first Premier League appearance against the Gunners later that month.
Anderson may find it hard to break his way into the first team of his boyhood club, who are set to spend big in the summer after their Saudi takeover earlier this season.
But, whatever happens, the Scotland Under-21 international certainly won’t be playing in League Two next season.
