Gary Neville has said Manchester United face ‘a long road’ until the end of the season after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils exited the European competition as they failed to respond to Renan Lodi’s first-half goal, which condemned them to a 1-0 defeat on the night and a 2-1 loss on aggregate.

Neville Tweeted his thoughts on another disappointing result

Well off the pace in the Premier League and knocked out of both domestic cups early on, United haven’t won a trophy since they captured the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in May 2017.

The Champions League represented United’s only remaining chance of silverware this season but, like many, club legend Neville was not shocked to see his old club dumped out of the competition.

“No surprise last night,” he Tweeted. “Any decent team, with organisation and fight, are likely to beat this United team.

United’s previous match saw them beat top four rivals Tottenham 3-2 in the league, but they still face an uphill battle to overcome Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification.

And Neville found it difficult to appreciate the Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired victory due to his old club’s inconsistency.

“It’s why I couldn’t get excited after Spurs last Saturday,” he explained. “That Spurs performance will get you beat v a good team. A long road in to the end of May!”

United haven’t had their hands on a trophy since Mourinho’s spell

Last season saw United finish as runners-up in both the Premier League and Europa League under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

A summer spree saw the bring in Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane amid talk of a title charge.

However, the Norwegian boss was dismissed in November 2021 after a run of poor results saw his trophyless spell in the dugout come to an end.

Solskjaer was replaced by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis but his tenure will also end without any silverware.

In February the German saw his side suffer an FA Cup loss to Championship side Middlesbrough, and now they only have fourth place to compete for.
