Arsenal face Liverpool in the Premier League tonight in what has always been a historic clash.
The Gunners and the Reds are two of the biggest teams in the world and there have been some fascinating games between the two at Highbury and the Emirates.
Now, the match on Wednesday has the potential to be one of the biggest games between the sides, with both Liverpool and Arsenal on superb winning runs.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have won their last eight league games, while Mikel Arteta’s side are also on a fine winning run.
So, no matter what happens, at least one of these winning streaks will come to an end.
This is a huge game for both sides for slightly different reasons, but a bad result for either could derail their respective challenges.
The Reds are right in the Premier League title race, while the Gunners are in pole position to secure a top-four finish.
So, with that in mind, let us take a walk down memory lane and reminisce about some famous/exciting games in north London.
Arsenal v Liverpool: Premier League record
Arsenal wins – 16
Liverpool wins – 24
Draws – 19
Arsenal 4 Liverpool 2 – 2003/04 season
During Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season, it wasn’t all easy for Arsene Wenger’s side and as the season approached its conclusion, Liverpool arrived at Highbury and nearly spoiled everything.
Two first-half goals from Sami Hyypia and Michael Owen put the Reds 2-1 up at half-time.
However, Arsenal roared back and sealed a massive 4-2 win.
Robert Pires scored the equaliser, but the day belonged to Thierry Henry.
The magical Frenchman scored a hat-trick that included a divine solo goal to seal a big win.
Looking back at it now, this was a massive moment in Arsenal’s 2003/04 campaign.
Arsenal 1 Liverpool 1 – 2010/2011 season
On the face of it, this doesn’t look like an exciting or even memorable match.
However, it was the game that effectively ended the Gunners’ title hopes for the 2010/11 season.
With seven games to play, Wenger’s side knew that they needed a win to keep their title hopes alive.
Jamie Carragher suffered a horrific injury after a clash of heads with John Flanagan, so there was a lot of injury time.
However, the game looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw, until Jay Spearing brought down Cesc Fabregas in the box.
Up stepped Robin van Persie to score a 98th minute penalty. If the Gunners had held on, they would have cut the gap to Manchester United at the top of the table to four points.
However, the Gunners folded and Emmanuel Eboue fouled Lucas Leiva in the penalty area in the 102nd minute.
Dirk Kuyt scored from the spot to crush Arsenal’s title dreams for another season.
Arsenal 4 Liverpool 1 – 2014/15 season
Arsenal pretty much ended Liverpool’s hopes of securing a top-four finish during the 2014/15 season when they thrashed the Reds at the Emirates.
Brendan Rodgers’ side were six points behind the Gunners with eight games to play, so they needed a win to keep those Champions League dreams alive.
However, Arsenal turned in a scintillating display in front of their own fans.
Wenger’s side scored three goals in the space of eight minutes in the first half to end the game as a contest.
Fine goals from Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez put the home side in total command.
Liverpool pulled one back through a Jordan Henderson penalty before Emre Can was dismissed for two yellow cards.
Olivier Giroud added a fourth to put gloss on the scoreline and condemn Liverpool to a miserable defeat.
Arsenal 3 Liverpool 4 – 2016/17 season
This match took place on the opening weekend of the season and it was extremely entertaining.
Arsenal scored the opener through Theo Walcott after he had missed a penalty moments earlier before Philippe Coutinho whipped in a delightful free-kick to level the scores.
However, in the second half, the Reds came out and stunned the home side with three goals in the space of 14 minutes to ensure the three points returned to Merseyside.
Adam Lallana, Coutinho and a debut goal for Sadio Mane proved to be enough for the Reds, despite a spirited fightback from Arsenal.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers dragged the Gunners back in it for a moment but the Reds held on.
The goal from Mane was particularly special as he cut in from the right and unleashed a thunderous shot into the far corner.
This was a sign of what was to come from the Senegalese international in a Liverpool shirt.
At the end of the season, Liverpool finished one point above the Gunners to seal fourth place, so in hindsight, this was a crucial game.
Arsenal 3 Liverpool 3 – 2017/18 season
This was another enthralling game between two sides, who at the time, really couldn’t defend.
The away side raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of Coutinho and Mohamed Salah.
However, Arsenal responded in spectacular fashion and scored three goals in the space of five minutes to put the Gunners in command.
Alexis Sanchez, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil scored and Arsenal looked to be on their way to three points.
However, Roberto Firmino had other ideas, and after he was played in by Emre Can, he fired a strike at goal that Petr Cech weakly tipped into the net.
This result kept Liverpool one point ahead of the Gunners in the race for the top four and they ended the season ahead of Arsenal, so Firmino’s goal proved to be very important.
