Wales are through to the World Cup play-off final after a thrilling win over Austria in Cardiff last night.

The Dragons are set to play Scotland or Ukraine for the right to go to the 2022 Qatar World Cup but that game has been put on hold for now.

Gareth Bale was the hero for his country once again

Therefore, Wales’ hopes of playing in their first World Cup since 1958 still hang in the balance.

The play-off final was meant to take place next week, but Ukraine’s football authorities requested that their semi-final be postponed after Russia invaded the country.

This means Wales are going to have to wait a bit longer to find out who and when they will play in what will be one of the national team’s biggest games in a long time.

When could Wales play their World Cup play-off final?

FIFA plan to squeeze Scotland v Ukraine in at some point in June but both sides have four UEFA Nations League fixtures to play that month, including one against each other.

However, the plan is that if the semi-final can go ahead, the final will be held in the same month. FIFA haven’t yet confirmed an exact date for either match.

Hopefully, the situation in Ukraine has improved by June and the play-off semi final can take place.

If everything were to work out, June would turn into a congested month for the Dragons as they have four Nations League fixtures scheduled. Some of these may be put back.

The big match would be that World Cup play-off final, of course, and it is set to take place at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The story so far

Wales have had an incredible journey to get to this point and the future looks very bright for the Dragons, no matter what happens next.

However, this group of players have the chance to make history, and if they play like they did on Thursday, you would back them to beat Scotland or Ukraine.

Wales finished second in Group E, five points behind Belgium but they only lost one game during the whole campaign.

Their opponents last night Austria finished fourth in Group F but actually managed to win one more point than the Dragons, though they did play two extra games.

Still, the Austria side that started in Cardiff included the likes of David Alaba, Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer, so they are a strong team.

Wales have Bale and the Real Madrid forward scored two magical goals, including a divine free-kick, to seal Wales’ place in the World Cup play-off final.

This was a memorable night in Cardiff and Wales are so close to making it to Qatar.

What has been said?

Robert Page said: “We’re a cup final away now. There was no talk of the importance of the game. They know what it is.

“We prepared like any other game, and it was all about Austria. They are a very good team.

“Our supporters got us through it. A million per cent. When they were singing the anthem in the 85th minute, that gets you through it. It gets you across the line.”

Aaron Ramsey said: “It means everything. Playing in front of these [fans], what more can you want?

“We are game away from a World Cup which is everything for me, for Balo (Gareth Bale), for the nation, for the group of lads.

“We have come a long way since the early days and this would be the icing on the cake, to qualify.

“We know there is still a bit of work to be done but we can enjoy tonight.

“It’s not been easy for [Bale] but him coming and playing for his country, it means everything to him. You can see that from the way he plays.”
