David Beckham and Raheem Sterling have both been brilliant servants for club and country, but who would you prefer in your team?
That’s the debate on The Sports Bar that has caused quite a stir over which player, in their prime, would make it into the current England team.
Sterling has made 72 Three Lions appearances and has scored 18 goals, playing a starring role in the route to the Euro 2020 final.
Beckham played 115 times and netted 17 times, playing in five major tournaments for England.
Both have been spectacular during their peak and former England defender Danny Mills admitted he would go for the Man City man.
“It is a difficult one, but I’m going with Raheem Sterling,” Mills told talkSPORT. “Only on the basis that I don’t know where Becks fits into the current way of playing.
“Raheem Sterling has loads of pace, runs in behind, and plays high on the right-hand side.
“That wouldn’t be Becks’ position.”
When asked if Beckham could play as a wing-back, Mills added: “That’s a complete waste. Raheem Sterling because of the current game as you are not throwing crosses into the box.
“The game isn’t played like that anymore. Becks would have to play the quarterback role in that midfield, but I don’t think there’s a place for him.”
Former Charlton, Crystal Palace and Newcastle midfielder Darren Ambrose made his case for the Manchester United legend.
“I feel Beckham was underrated as a player,” Ambrose told talkSPORT. “He gets into the England team now, over any one of them.
“I’d have him over anyone of them. Imagine Beckham playing with Harry Kane putting some of those deliveries in.
“I’d have him in front of Trent. Trent’s deliveries are not as good as David Beckham’s. He was elite. That’s what he was known for.”
