The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has announced that there is no tsunami threat in the country following the strong earthquake that hit Taiwan early Wednesday morning.

The 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:41 a.m. with a depth of 15 kilometers near Taiwan.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the PHIVOLCS posted.

The 6.6 magnitude quake, Reuters reported, occurred near the city of Taitung and that there were no immediate reports of damage.

But the quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The quake had a depth of 30.6 km (19 miles).
