Erik Ten Hag has other managerial options besides Manchester United, talkSPORT has been told.
The Red Devils are currently looking to find a long-term replacement for Ralf Rangnick by the end of the season, but face competition for the Ajax boss with ‘two other big European clubs’ chasing him.
According to The Sun, Ten Hag is the front runner for the job at Old Trafford and is ahead of other candidates such as Mauricio Pochettino.
Now, Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan has revealed Ten Hag is attracting admirers elsewhere, and Ajax are not surprised their manager could be heading for the exit.
Speaking on Tuesday’s Hawksbee and Jacobs, Van Der Kraan told talkSPORT: “No [this news was not a surprise]. Ajax fans have expected they were going to lose him in the summer.
“The departure of Marc Overmars as technical director, his [Ten Hag’s] big friend on and off the pitch… has made it very obvious that Ten Hag is not looking for another season at Ajax.
“He’s been there for four years, almost five. He’s won five trophies, he’s guided Ajax as far as he possibly can. He’s built up brilliant teams, even after the sale of loads of top players and young talent. I can’t see him doing it again [doing another season there].”
When asked whether Ten Hag would work well with United’s main man Cristiano Ronaldo should the Portugal international be at the club next season, the Dutchman confirmed that, whilst Ten Hag has not faced a character like CR7, he does have the talent to do well at Old Trafford.
“He’s been in management for over 23 years and he’s got a couple of difficult lads at Ajax,” he laughed, “But it’s nowhere near the Galactico.
“He’s not been the most brilliant kind of guy in front of a camera or speaking to his players, but his football brain is brilliant.”
Van Der Kraan went on explain that Ten Hag has other clubs waiting in the wings to swoop for him, and that the Dutch boss will be looking to join a club capable of winning major trophies.
“There is not only Manchester United,” he said.
“There are two other big European clubs which he’s keeping his cards very much close to his chest about.
“I think it’s not an automatic way to Old Trafford if that chance opens up for him. What’s more important for him is where can he play Champions League every season with a side that can actually win it”.
United do hold an advantage over Ten Hag’s other admirers, though, according to Van Der Kraan.
The Dutch manager apparently enjoys working closely with technical directors, meaning Rangnick’s guaranteed presence could persuade the Ajax man to come to Manchester.
He said: “Ten Hag recently explained that ideally he’d like a technical director to sit next to him on the bench even in matches and to be around him all the time, at the training ground, everywhere.
“…Ten Hag is a big fan of it and of course with Rangnick being there, you could almost see an ideal option for him”.
