Manchester City booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals as they swept aside Southampton, winning 4-1 at St Mary’s.

Raheem Sterling slotted City ahead on 12 minutes, however, they were pegged back on the stroke of half time through Aymeric Laporte’s comical own goal.

Kevin De Bruyne restored their lead with a penalty after Gabriel Jesus was fouled in the box by Mohammed Salisu.

A pile-driver from Phil Foden extended the away side’s lead while a clever finish from Riyad Mahrez added some gloss to the scoreline.

It was a very good day at the office going forward for the six-time Cup winners as they netted four goals on the south coast.

However, talkSPORT’s David Connolly believes there’s still something missing in Pep Guardiola’s pursuit of perfection – a focal point up front.

Jack Grealish was tasked with leading Guardiola’s line but endured a frustrating afternoon as he struggled to get among the goals.

City have been heavily linked with Erling Haaland in the summer and while Connolly didn’t outright name the Borussia Dortmund hotshot, he believes Guardiola’s men would be ‘even more complete’ with someone who’s experienced playing centrally in their ranks.

In the end it was a comfortable FA Cup tie for City

Is Haaland the missing piece of Pep’s puzzle?

“I don’t know what City fans think about the experiment Pep has used this season,” Connolly said on commentary for talkSPORT.

“Say they want to win the Champions League or going into next season, are they going to do this again?

“Mahrez played as a nine against West Ham but it didn’t quite work out so he was shifted out wide at half time and Jesus went down the middle. We’ve seen Foden through the middle, we’ve seen Grealish through the middle, we’ve seen Bernardo Silva through the middle.

“To be even more of a complete team I think they need that focal point [up front].”
