Harry Maguire’s selection in the England squad for the upcoming international friendlies has been called into question by Darren Bent.
Maguire has come under fire for his recent performances for Manchester United.
Those displays for the Red Devils has led some to argue that he does not deserve a place in the squad for the friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.
Former England striker and talkSPORT host Bent believes there are centre-backs who are more in form than the United skipper.
When asked if it is a surprise Eric Dier is not in the squad, Bent told Drive: “Do you know what, it is. His form has been a lot better than some of the people in this squad.
“Harry Maguire. How he’s in the squad, I don’t know. Gareth Southgate can’t keep picking players because they’ve never let him down.
“Harry Maguire has no form at the moment.”
When asked about Tyrone Mings, who is in the squad, Bent added: “He’s been better than Maguire.
“He has no form at the minute. The last thing he needs to be doing is playing for England.
“In what stratosphere has Maguire been better than [Fikayo] Tomori? None.”
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate was questioned about Maguire’s inclusion in the squad and he admitted that dropping the centre-back was not even considered.
“I don’t think it ever crossed our mind not to select Harry Maguire for this squad,” he said.
“He’s been a key part of the starting XI that got us to a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final.
“So I know the club are going through a difficult period but you’ve got to look at who are our best players in the core of the team and he’s in that group.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s one of our best centre-backs and form, in that sense, is temporary.
“In our forward areas, there’s perhaps a lot more competition for some of those wide places. So I will always be accused of double standards on picking on form but there are nuances to that.”
