Leeds United’s case against RB Leipzig over the transfer of Jean-Kevin Augustin was heard yesterday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
If the Whites lose, they will be forced to pay £18million for the Frenchman.
This has the potential to really hurt the West Yorkshire club, and this is their appeal after FIFA decided in June last year that they had to pay the Bundesliga club the agreed fee in their obligation to buy deal.
With that in mind, let us have a look what has happened so far.
Why do Leeds have to pay Leipzig?
Back in January 2020, Leeds were pushing to win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, but they needed a striker.
The Whites were in the middle of a sticky patch and they managed to agree a deal with Leipzig to bring Augustin to Elland Road on loan until the end of the campaign.
The Frenchman arrived with a big reputation and had a good goalscoring record for the Bundesliga side.
Leeds agreed to cover all of Augustin’s salary, which was believed to be over £75,000-a-week.
They also agreed to an obligation to buy Augustin for £18m if they were promoted to the Premier League.
However, due to Covid, the season was suspended and restarted in June 2020.
The Whites sent Augustin back to Leipzig at the beginning of July and they then went on to win promotion.
Leipzig argued that Leeds had to pay the £18m because they were promoted, while the Whites insisted they wouldn’t pay because the loan officially ended on June 30.
FIFA stepped in, they ruled in Leipzig’s favour and ordered the Whites to pay up.
Leeds appealed, and CAS will decide in the coming months if they have to shell out £18m for a player who left nearly two years ago.
What happened to Augustin?
After scoring nine Bundesliga goals during the 2017/18 season, Augustin’s career in Germany tailed off.
However, considering there were Premier League clubs interested in the Frenchman, it looked as if the Whites had pulled off a coup by signing him.
Instead, the move turned into a nightmare for Leeds and Augustin.
Marcelo Bielsa demands a lot from his players physically and Augustin couldn’t hit those levels.
As a result, he didn’t start a single league game for the Whites, and managed to play just 48 minutes of first-team football in which he didn’t provide a goal contribution.
Augustin then suffered an injury before the Championship restart in June and he never played again.
The 24-year-old currently plays for Nantes in Ligue 1 but he has only made four league appearances.
What happens next?
Leeds have a nervous wait to see if their appeal to CAS is successful or not.
If CAS rule in their favour, the Whites won’t have to pay Leipzig anything at all and they can just forget about what happened.
However, if CAS agree with FIFA, the Whites will have to shell out the £18m in three instalments to Leipzig, which is not what Leeds need right now.
The CAS hearing ended on the March 15, and now Leeds and Leipzig await the result; however, this could take up to a few months.
The Bundesliga side, though, claim they are ‘very confident’ of winning this case, which doesn’t sound good for Leeds.
Meanwhile, the Whites are yet to comment on the matter.
