Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be a big racing fan – and he even sent his former midfielder Nicky Butt some tips when he headed to the Cheltenham Festival.
Manchester United‘s legendary boss is regularly seen at meetings up and down the country and he also owns multiple horses.
And Butt, who visited Cheltenham hoping to enjoy the racing and some sun in Gloucestershire and was instead greeted with rain, said whilst he has tried to help him, his old boss’ tips don’t usually win.
“The gaffer, Sir Alex, has sent me a load of tips,” Butt told talkSPORT, who have the first four races each day live on the airwaves.
“I’m sure it won’t be great because he’s never sent me a tip before that’s won! So, we’ll see what happens.
“I’m not really a gambling man, I’ve come here for the day and the lovely sunshine.”
Salford City, who Butt co-owns alongside some of his former Class of ’92 teammates, travelled to Cheltenham themselves last year, when they faced them in League Two.
They will be hoping for a similar fate to the Robins, who won promotion from the fourth tier last season.
However, their 1-1 draw with Rochdale on Tuesday night means they are now ten points off the top six.
And Butt believes it will be ‘very difficult’ for the Ammies to make the play-offs this season.
“I think last night sealed it for us,” Butt added. “It’s going to be really difficult now.
“We could maybe squeeze in if we’re lucky, but I wouldn’t put money on us to get into the play-offs at the minute. Hopefully, we can do it.
“There’s a long way to go yet but it will be very difficult for us.”
