Erik ten Hag has not come to play at Manchester United.
The Dutchman officially took the reins at Old Trafford in May but is already making his mark on a club that’s lost its way since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson left as manager in 2013.
He’s vowed to succeed where a number of well-respected managers have failed since Fergie left in restoring the good times back to Man United.
“Manchester United is a big name,” the Dutchman told the PA news agency. “It’s a real challenge to get them again restored to where they belong. I am highly motivated to get that done.
“We want to win every game and it doesn’t matter who the opponent is.
“I think that belongs to the status of Manchester United and that is what we will do. That will be the demand of the squad and of every player.”
Reassuring words from the boss but Man United aren’t going to achieve these goals without rolling their sleeves up.
A former player of Ten Hag’s at Ajax says there’s no danger of that going amiss – Joel Veltman telling talkSPORT the Red Devils players are getting a boss that doesn’t do having a laugh.
On Ten Hag’s managerial methods, the Brighton defender said: “Very, very, very serious. Almost every training session or every game he’s not laughing that much or just focused.
“He’ll do whatever it takes to win the games and be the best for the lads in training.”
Veltman added: “United have amazing players, they only need some tactical stuff I’d say and I think he is the perfect guy for it. Tactically he’s one of the best I’ve worked with.”
Footage of gruelling training sessions, where Man United players are made to do press-ups for conceding goals, plus Ten Hag cancelling a players’ trip to the set of popular soap opera Neighbours while on tour in Australia strongly indicates the new manager means business.
And the methods, however cruel anyone in the Man United camp could find them, are already producing encouraging results with the Red Devils thumping rivals Liverpool 4-0 in a friendly earlier in July.
And getting the better of the likes of Liverpool in emphatic fashion like that would be a clear restoration of those good times that everyone connected with Manchester United Football Club craves.
