Robert Lewandowski’s move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona is now a done deal, both clubs have confirmed.
The star striker has been a major transfer target for the Spanish giants this summer and, after protracted talks, Xavi has finally got his man.
According to multiple reports, Bayern have accepted a bid from Barcelona which will total €50million (£42.5million) including add-ons.
It’s understood that Lewandowski will sign a four-year contract at the club with personal terms known to have already been agreed.
The Poland captain turns 34 next month.
Lewandowski said goodbye to his Bayern teammates on Friday and it’s believed that he will sign his new contract in the next 24 hours.
He is expected to fly out to join Barcelona’s US tour on Sunday.
A medical will take place in Miami, and then, all being well, the transfer will be officially completed.
Barca’s statement read: “FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Robert Lewandowski, dependent on the player passing a medical and contracts being signed.”
Bayern president president Herbert Hainer explained in the club statement: “It’s good for both sides that we have clarity.
“Robert has earned our appreciation, he has won everything with us. We are incredibly grateful to him.”
Club legend and CEO Oliver Kahn said: “We have agreed to release Robert Lewandowski. We have a verbal agreement with FC Barcelona, the contract is still pending.
“We know very well what we have to thank Robert for, but great players have also left FC Bayern in the past, and even after that, Bayern’s world did not fall apart.
“On the contrary, it often continued with even more success.”
Board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic added: “Robert Lewandowski has done great things for FC Bayern.
“We spoke at length with our colleagues from Barcelona and clarified the details. He said farewell this morning.
“After our trip to the USA, he’ll come back one more time and we’ll have a coffee together. We wish him every success at his new club.”
Lewandowski was due to enter the final year of his Bayern deal, but confirmed in May that he wanted to leave.
He had a magnificent eight years at the club, winning the Bundesliga in each of those eight seasons.
Lewandowski also lifted the Champions League trophy with Bayern in 2020.
Now though, he will seek a fresh challenge.
For the second season running, Lewandowski was the leading goalscorer in Europe’s top leagues during the 2021/22 campaign.
As a result, he is irrefutably among the world’s best strikers at present, despite the fact he is fast approaching his mid-30s.
Bayern were understandably reluctant to let Lewandowski leave, but with just one year left on his deal they have opted to accept a fee from Barcelona now, rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
