Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been dealt a fresh injury blow following Liverpool’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Crystal Palace on Friday.
The Reds comfortably overcame Palace in the soaring heat of Singapore thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah.
But the injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain is the only dampener on what was a positive response following Tuesday’s 4-0 defeat against Manchester United.
The 28-year-old went down with a hamstring injury on the stroke of half time and immediately asked to be replaced.
The England international’s disappointment quickly turned to annoyance as he proceeded to punch the turf in frustration as he faced the prospect of another injury lay-off.
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future at Anfield has been called into question with the former Arsenal man entering the final 12 months of his contract.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp used the midfielder sparingly towards the end of last season as the Reds chased an unprecedented quadruple.
But with the slate wiped clean ahead of a new season and the chance to impress, Oxlade-Chamberlain will be devastated that the breaks have been put on his pre-season preparations.
He is not the only Liverpool player struggling with fitness as Diogo Jota, Alisson and Joe Gomez all missed the victory over Patrick Vieira’s side.
Portuguese forward Jota picked up a hamstring injury of his own in training, while Gomez was left out as a precaution.
The injury to goalkeeper Alisson appears to be more of a concern to Klopp than that of Gomez and Jota.
“Ali was not 100 percent,” Klopp told the club’s official website. “He finished the session earlier, was doing the warming up and felt something so now there we have to wait as well. I think pretty much all the others are fine, so that’s it.”
Liverpool head to Germany for their next pre-season friendly where they will take on RB Leipzig before a clash with Austrian champions RB Salzburg.
