Jamie Carragher’s long-time centre back partner Sami Hyypia has told talkSPORT of his surprise at the Liverpool legend’s TV partnership with old Manchester United foe Gary Neville.

Only Steven Gerrard played more career games alongside Carragher than Hyypia, with the two forming a rock-solid partnership at the back for the Reds.

But Carragher has since swapped the Finn for a United legend

The Finn won two FA Cups, two League Cups and a Champions League title while partnering Carragher at the back at Anfield, and knows him as well as anyone.

And so it wasn’t much of a surprise to Hyypia that Carragher turned his hand to punditry post-retirement – it was more about the man who now alongside him in the Sky Sports studios.

Carragher and Neville has plenty of run-ins during their football careers, playing on either side of arguably the biggest rivalry in English football, but now enjoy a playful love-hate relationship on our screens.

“I think he has always been good at talking if you know what I mean,” Hyypia said about his former Liverpool teammate.

“I think maybe his accent isn’t the easiest to understand but I think he has done well.

“What has surprised me the most is that he’s working with Gary, even more than that he’s on TV!”

Carragher and Neville have become punditry sensations since teaming up in 2013, with their Monday Night Football coverage often a must-watch, particularly when they covered the European Super League fiasco.

But it’s an unlikely friendship given the two were Mr. Liverpool and Mr. Manchester United as players during one of the Premier League’s most intense rivalries.

The pair regularly clashed on the pitch in a fixture that saw an extraordinary number of red cards.

Unlike Carragher, fellow Scouser and Liverpool legend Gerrard instead forged a path into management, which many expected Carragher to do.

Hyypia, though, hasn’t been surprised about his former teammate’s move into the dugout, which saw him end Rangers’ long wait for a Scottish title.

And he can see the current Aston Villa boss ending up back at Liverpool one day.

“No, I’m not surprised,” Hyypia said about Gerrard moving to the dugout.

“He’s done well and probably one day he will take over the Reds as well, but we have a good guy as our manager.

“Jurgen [Klopp] suits the Liverpool people well and the club, so at the moment everything is fine but probably in the future Stevie will be at the club.”
