As punishment for conceding goals, Manchester United players are performing press-ups during pre-season training.
The Premier League side are in the Thai capital as part of the club’s preparations for their ‘friendly’ against bitter rivals Liverpool and manager Erik ten Hag is putting them through their paces.
Ten Hag took over the reins at Old Trafford following a disappointing season for the club which saw them finish sixth, missing out on Champions League football.
But by the looks of things, the former Ajax boss is doing his utmost to get his players in optimum shape.
The Red Devils held an open training session at the Rajamangala National Stadium on Monday in front of thousands of adoring fans but what was quickly apparent was the Dutchman’s policy on press ups as punishment.
In one clip, Zinedine Iqbal scores during a small-sided game prompting the Ten Hag to instruct the defending team to perform a number press ups before delivering further instructions.
The unforgiving manager is also seen to be smiling whilst the players are enduring their punishment of five press ups per goal conceded – suggesting he will be no push over this season.
The United boss is excited at the prospect of locking horns with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and putting on a show for the fans in Bangkok on Tuesday.
“Playing against Liverpool is always exciting, it’s a big game, we are looking forward and it’s a really good test for us,” he said.
“The standard of Manchester United is to win every game so we will start with that in mind and be determined and we are happy to play this game in Bangkok for many, many fans.”
The club fly to Australia later this week for more friendlies against Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
Ten Hag has his work cut out id he is to help United close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool in the long term but first, his aim must be to lead United back into the Champions League.
Key to that is the future of Cristiano Ronaldo who failed to return to pre-season training last week prompting intense speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner but United have insisted that the talismanic 37-year-old is not for sale.
Ten Hag admitted that he is counting on the Portuguese star this season but his Old Trafford future is looking far from certain.
