Gary Neville has defended Erik ten Hag’s decision to keep Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain, telling fans to stop ‘bullying’ the defender.

Ten Hag confirmed the England centre back will remain in his post ahead of his first game as United boss, taking on rivals Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in Bangkok.

Maguire’s last two matches against the Reds saw calls for him to be dropped after losing 4-0 and 5-0 in the Premier League, infuriating pundits like Roy Keane.

His performances saw interim manager Ralf Rangnick leave him on the bench at times as United’s worst ever Premier League season wound to a close, but Ten Hag has since backed the defender.

The Dutchman said: “Harry Maguire is the captain. I have to get to know all the players, but he’s an established captain and he’s achieved a lot of success. I don’t see this as an issue.”

And his decision has been backed by former club captain Gary Neville, who even took on fans’ dissent at the call on Twitter.

After saying the news was ‘Good!’ Neville expanded on his thoughts.

He said: “So the same United fans fuming with me for applauding the decision to keep Maguire as captain seem to be without knowing criticising the new manager for his decision.

“Maybe support Maguire and stop bullying him on here! The new manager obviously likes him.”

Neville also replied to one angry fan saying: “You having a go at me or our new manager that selected him as the Captain?”
