Chelsea have been told to prioritise signing Raheem Sterling over Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, with the latter labelled ‘overrated’.
The Blues’ new owner Todd Boehly is considering moves for both of the stars, according to reports, with Chelsea seen as one of a limited number of destinations that could afford either player.
The American billionaire has met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, while Paris Saint-Germain are keen to offload high earner Neymar.
But according to former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy, there’s one English star who should be far more important.
Discussing potential signings, the talkSPORT host said: “I actually think that, I’ve said this many many times, I think Neymar is overrated.
“I’m not saying he’s a bad player, I think he’s overrated, that’s my own take on that, I’m not so sure he’d fit in at Chelsea.
“Ronaldo, there’s a part of me that’s a little bit concerned that it’s not going to be a Thomas Tuchel signing, it feels a little bit like a Todd Boehly one where he’s come in with the money and he’s getting seduced by one of the world’s greatest ever players and he’s available.
“And then there’s Sterling, which for me makes so much sense, I don’t quite know what he’s going to cost but it feels and sounds like it’s going to be a decent deal.”
Despite concrete links to Ronaldo with the Portuguese superstar so far failing to return to training with Manchester United ahead of the new season, some aren’t so sure such a deal will happen.
That includes talkSPORT’s transfer guru Alex Crook who doesn’t see United signing a replacement up front, or Chelsea in need of an ageing forward.
Asked whether United boss Erik ten Hag will want to keep the 37-year-old, Crook said: “I think he does, if they let him go they have to have a replacement lined up.
“He still scored 24 goals last season, he doesn’t have the mobility of Ronaldo first time round when he was at Old Trafford but he still knows how to put the ball in the net and that’s a precious commodity.
“There aren’t that many number nines out there, Darwin Nunez was a United target earlier in the summer, unless they’re going to go to Bayern Munich and say you can have Ronaldo and we’ll have Robert Lewandowski I don’t see how they’ll replace him.
“A number nine hasn’t been high on Ten Hag’s priority list, they sounded out Nunez but he was always going to go to Liverpool.
“The one forward player he is keen to bring in Antony who is more of a wide forward from Ajax but they want big money and he’s not really a Ronaldo replacement.”
Similarly, Chelsea, who are the leading candidates for Ronaldo’s signature, may have their manager in the way.
“I think ultimately Thomas Tuchel will have the final decisions,” Crook said. “Todd Boehly is leading negotiations but it’s my understanding that Tuchel is leading the list of targets.
“Todd Boehly as an owner strikes me as somebody who would want to make a big statement, a Ronaldo or a Neymar, clearly he has held talks with Jorge Mendes, that’s not been denied to me.
“I’m not convinced as much as Tuchel is an admirer of Ronaldo that he will push for Ronaldo, my understanding is that Raheem Sterling is his top target and that may happen by the end of the week.”
