Chelsea are reportedly monitoring Manchester United’s deal to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

The Red Devils have agreed an initial £56million fee for the Netherlands midfielder, with a possible £17m in add-ons.

De Jong has endured a disappointing three years at Barcelona and his contract expires next summer

De Jong is yet to agree personal terms with United and it is understood the 25-year-old remains keen on playing Champions League football next season.

According to the Guardian, Chelsea are tracking the deal to see if it collapses and could pounce with a late hijack bid.

The Blues are prioritising attacking and defensive areas as a matter of urgency this summer, but Thomas Tuchel needs new recruits in midfield, with an ageing squad and multiple players in the last year of their contract.

A deal to sign Declan Rice from West Ham could prove too difficult and Tuchel is a known admirer of De Jong since the midfielder’s time at Ajax.

United could potentially profit from De Jong joining Chelsea as it may convince the Blues to cash in on N’Golo Kante – who is out of contract in 2023.

The Red Devils are thought to be interested in the France superstar, while Jorginho could also be sold to Juventus if Chelsea land a new midfielder.

The Blues are already in talks with Juve over a deal to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt, with Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic mentioned as possible makeweights.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are making progress over a £45million deal for Raheem Sterling, and Man City teammate Nathan Ake could follow the forward to Stamford Bridge.

Much of Chelsea’s business this summer will depend on whether Leeds winger Raphinha snubs the west London club to join Barcelona.

talkSPORT understands Barca are increasingly confident they have won the race after matching the Blues’ £60m bid.
