Neymar to Newcastle United? If Joelinton had his way then the world’s most expensive player would be lacing his boots up at St James’ Park next season.
The PSG star’s future has been the subject of speculation following an interview by club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi last week, who failed to rule out the Brazilian’s exit this summer.
Neymar’s 2017 world-record transfer from Barcelona to the Parc des Princes has been littered with controversy and injury and reports in France have suggested that the Ligue 1 champions could be willing to part ways with the Brazilian.
Earlier this week, Thiago Silva suggested the £200m man should join Chelsea and now it’s the turn of Joelinton to sell Newcastle, it seems.
“We can get him a spot, sure, in any team in the world,” he joked to Cast Futebol Clube when asked if he would like to see Neymar move to the north east.
“If he comes it will be…I can’t explain it, the man is an idol. He’s huge in world football so the invitation is done.
“Ney, if you are listening to this, you can come!”
Joelinton’s outpouring for the Brazil national team captain continued with the Newcastle fan-favourite assuring Neymar his potential teammates would do everything they could to give him as much of the ball as possible if he ever moved to St James’ Park.
“I’ll run to you all the time. In defence, we assure you the ball will reach him, it will come easy.
“His quality, the visibility, so if we have the chance.. I hope.”
Joelinton then appeared to make a light-hearted plea to boss Eddie Howe and team-mate Bruno Guimaraes to coax Neymar into a move.
He said: “Coach, call him, the number 10 shirt is waiting for him.
“I’ll send a message to Bruno. Bruno has his number, he can send a message to Ney to play there.”
Whilst Newcastle have the funds at their disposal to sign a player of Neymar’s calibre, it appears that for now, Joelinton’s wishes will have to remain a fantasy.
Newcastle have made a strong start to the summer transfer window after securing the signings of goalkeeper Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Dutch centre-back Sven Botman.
The Magpies are expected to further bolster their attacking options and have been in regular dialogue with French club Reims for highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike.
But the addition of the 20-year-old has so far proved difficult with the players’ representatives reportedly wishing to explore all options before making a decision on his future.
The Magpies may now choose to look to other attacking options with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin a possibility.
